Knowledge-based approaches for river basin management

چکیده
Papers published in Hydrology and Earth System Sciences Discussions are under open-access review for the journal Hydrology and Earth System Sciences Abstract Rare attempts to use knowledge technologies and other relevant approaches are found in the river basin management. Some applications of expert systems as well as utilization of soft computing techniques (as neural networks or genetic algorithms) are known in an experimental level. Knowledge management approaches still have not 5 been used at all. In this paper we discuss knowledge-based approaches in the river basin management as a difficult yet important direction which could be proven to be helpful. We summarize the research done in the scope of the AQUIN project, one of first Czech knowledge management projects in the river basin management. The project was initiated by the water management company in Pilsen, where dispatchers 10 make decisions about manipulations on the reservoir N´yrsko, the strategic source of drinking water for inhabitants of Pilsen. The project aim was to support dispatchers' decision making under a high degree of uncertainty or data shortage. The research is continued in the scope of a new project AQUINpro, planned for the period of 2006 to 2008.

Supporting decision making in river basin systems using a declarative reasoning approach
River management conditions are highly variable and sometimes even unpredictable. Climatic, demographic, industrial and management or planning factors are the main sources of this variability that entails to consider more flexible ways to manage the system. Water pollution is an important problem of concern in river basins, principally for this abovementioned interconnection between all living ...
متن کاملIntegrated Planning of Water Resources Based on Sustainability Indices, a Case Study: Hamoon- Jazmorian Basin
Nowadays, the water supply and water demand management are the main issues in water resources planning. It is more important in a river basin with a complex system facing with droughts, climate changes, inter-basin water transfer and operational and under study dams. In this paper, for water resources planning in a river basin and reducing the difference between water resources and water demand...
متن کاملLow flow frequency analysis by L-moments method (Case study: Iranian Central Plateau River Basin)
Knowledge about low flow statistics is essential for effective water resource planning and management in ungauged orpoorly gauged catchment areas, especially in arid and semi-arid regions such as Iran. We employed a data set of 20 riverflow time-series from the Iranian Central Plateau River Basin, Iran to evaluate the low-flow series using several frequencyanalysis methods and compared the resu...

Many real-world spatially related problems, including river-basin planning and management, give rise to geographical information system based decision making, since the performance of spatial policy alternatives were traditionally and are still often represented by thematic maps. Advanced technologies and approaches, such as geographical information systems (GIS), offer a unique opportunity to ...
